The Earth Overshoot Day<\/a> reminds us year after year: we\u2019re living beyond our means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Events, too, have a responsibility to handle resources mindfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordCamp Vienna 2025 demonstrates how sustainability can be implemented without fuss \u2013 but with real impact<\/strong>. Through many small decisions that, together, make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. BYOL \u2013 Bring Your Own Lanyard<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Last year, WordCamp Central stopped producing lanyards. A small action that can have a big collective impact \u2013<\/strong> for the sake of the environment.<\/strong> If you already have one at home, please bring it along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you don’t have one? No problem \u2013 we\u2019ll have a small number of extras on site for anyone who needs one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks for doing your part to reduce waste.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Fewer shirts \u2013 produced fairly & locally<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone wants a new T-shirt \u2013 so attendees have the option to purchase a ticket without a T-shirt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who chose one will receive a long-lasting organic shirt<\/a>, fairly traded and fairly produced, printed in Vienna, using water-based, non-toxic inks<\/a>.<\/strong> And not just anywhere: printing is done by Siebdruckeria<\/a>, a local Viennese screen-printing studio that works exclusively with eco-conscious, water-soluble inks \u2013 free from plastic and heavy metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, less really is more \u2013 especially when it\u2019s done well. By the time this article was published, 43% of this year’s attendees had decided to produce one less T-shirt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Reusable bottles<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s durable WordCamp bottles <\/a>weren\u2019t given out to everyone, but rather specifically to our speakers \u2013 as a small thank-you for their contribution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If any are left over, they\u2019ll be shared with volunteers, organisers or raffled off to attendees. A thoughtful approach that avoids overproduction while still showing appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Climate-friendly access<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Campus of the University of Vienna \u2013 Altes AKH is centrally located and easy to reach<\/a> by public transport, bike, or on foot. That reduces CO\u2082 emissions \u2013 and makes getting there more convenient for everyone.<\/strong> A conscious choice that aligns with the event\u2019s overall approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Local catering, right from campus<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The food is local, too: catering comes from the restaurant Gangl, directly on Uni Campus<\/a>. Gangl attaches great importance to traceability of origin and sustainability, which is why its suppliers come from Austria and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short distances, local value creation, and significantly less CO\u2082 than trucked-in mass catering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasty, practical \u2013 and purposeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion: Practical over perfect<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability doesn\u2019t have to be grand or complicated. Often, it\u2019s enough to make conscious decisions \u2013 and act on them together.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
