Today I am going to give you a short tour through the history and inner workings of WordCamp Vienna. Join me to learn more about the people, the community and how we all ended up where we are today. So the story began roughly 5 years ago on January 31st 2013 with the very first Meetup. Surprisingly it took two Italian expats to organize the very first WordPress Meetup in Austria. Judging from the comments it was a full success<\/a>! And so WordPress Vienna become a regular, monthly thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July of the same year I joined the Meetup myself. I really liked learning stuff and just getting to know plenty of like-minded and interesting people. Things progressed nicely and in the summer of 2014 we had the two most successful events until that time with more than 40 RSVPs. So to Paolo and Luca it appeared to be the right moment to start thinking about the next step: Organizing a WordCamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a special Meetup we talked about this thing called "WordCamp" and formed a group of motivated people willing to start working on the very first incarnation of WordCamp Vienna. Fast forward a couple of months and in April 2015 WordCamp Vienna<\/a> happened with a full day of talks with over 150 attendees followed by a similarly successful contributor day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As everything went so well part of the team wanted to up the game: Make Vienna the European Capital of WordPress by bringing WordCamp Europe to Vienna in 2016. There only was what seemed to be a tiny problem at that point: Some of the organizers didn't feel like they could handle the much bigger responsibility of such a huge event. So some of us, including me, declined to apply for WordCamp Europe 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As up until here everything was always only pointing up this might sound like a sad turn at first. But actually it proved something really great:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The community is more than the sum of its parts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining team continued with their plan to apply for WCEU and actually succeeded to bring it to Vienna<\/a> the next year. After only a little bit over 3 years Vienna had turned from a black spot on the WordPress community map into the center of Europe attracting 2000 attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But once again other obligations turned up and everyone involved moved on. It looked like with the lack of organizers 2017 wouldn't see another WordCamp Vienna, wasting all the momentum from WordCamp Europe. But – by now you might already have guessed it – again the community was stronger than that. Denise took the lead and a whole new team formed. And what a team! They actually managed to grow the WordCamp<\/a> to almost double the size of what it was in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just two days before the WordCamp Denise approached me to ask if I could help them out as a MC as they were lacking volunteers. Of course I said yes. And this was it. The itching to become an organizer once again had never gone away and this finally pushed me over the edge again. Already during that weekend I decided I'd want to return in 2018. And luckily everyone welcomed me with open arms. They already invited me to their private organization debrief dinner and the rest is history. I was part of the team again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And here we are today. The majority of the 2017 team is on board again but also a lot of great new people joined. We are stronger than ever and together we are looking forward to the upcoming WordCamp Vienna. We'll have great speakers and do our best to offer you the best WordCamp you can imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And no matter what will happen next, who of us will stay and who will leave, one thing is for sure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es dreht sich alles um die Community.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heute m\u00f6chte ich mit euch eine kleine Tour durch die Geschichte und die inneren Abl\u00e4ufe des WordCamp Vienna machen. Begleitet mich und erfahrt mehr \u00fcber die Leute, die Community und wie wir da gelandet sind wo wir heute sind. Lasst uns einen Blick hinter die Kulissen werfen, ja?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Geschichte begann vor ca. 5 Jahren am 31.J\u00e4nner 2013 mit dem ersten Meetup. \u00dcberraschenderweise brauchte es zwei italienische Auswanderer um das erste WordPress Meetup in \u00d6sterreich zu organisieren. Und den Kommentaren nach war es ein voller Erfolg<\/a>! Und so wurde aus WordPress Vienna eine regelm\u00e4\u00dfige, monatliche Sache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Juli des selben Jahres war ich selbst das erste mal bei einem Meetup. Es hat mir gefallen neue Dinge zu lernen und einfach jede Menge interessanter Leute mit \u00e4hnlichen Interessen kennen zu lernen. Die Dinge entwickelten sich toll und im Sommer 2014 hatten wir die zwei bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt erfolgreichsten Events mit mehr als 40 Zusagen. F\u00fcr Paolo und Luca schien es der richtige Zeitpunkt um \u00fcber den n\u00e4chsten Schritt nachzudenken: Die Organisation eines WordCamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bei einem speziellen Meetup haben wir uns \u00fcber dieses Ding namens "WordCamp" unterhalten und eine Gruppe aus motivierten Leuten formierte sich um am allerersten WordCamp Vienna zu arbeiten. Kurz gesagt fand nur wenige Monate sp\u00e4ter im April 2015 das erste WordCamp Vienna<\/a> statt mit einem ganzen Tag voll Vortr\u00e4gen mit \u00fcber 150 Besuchern und gefolgt von einem genauso erfolgreichen Contributor Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nachdem alles so gut lief wollten einige im Team die Latte wieder etwas h\u00f6her legen: Wien sollte die europ\u00e4ische WordPress-Hauptstadt werden indem man das WordCamp Europe 2016 nach Wien bringt. Es gab nur ein kleines Problem: Einige der Organisatoren f\u00fchlten sich nicht bereit die deutlich gr\u00f6\u00dfere Verantwortung eines solchen Events zu stemmen. Also lehnten es einige, inklusive mir, ab sich f\u00fcr das WordCamp Europe 2016 zu bewerben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nachdem bis hierher alles immer nur nach oben gezeigt hatte mag das vielleicht wie ein R\u00fcckschlag klingen. Doch eigentlich bewies es etwas gro\u00dfartiges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Community ist mehr als die Summe ihrer Teile.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das verbleibende Team verfolgte weiter seinen Plan sich f\u00fcr das WCEU zu bewerben und es gelang ihnen tats\u00e4chlich es im n\u00e4chsten Jahr nach Wien zu bekommen<\/a>. Nach nur ein bisschen mehr als 3 Jahren hatte sich Wien von einem schwarzen Fleck auf der WordPress-Community-Landkarte in den Mittelpunkt Europas verwandelt und zog 2000 Besucher an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aber wiedereinmal tauchten andere Verpflichtungen auf und alle Beteiligten zogen weiter. Es sah so aus also w\u00fcrden wir aufgrund des Mangels an Organistoren 2017 kein weiteres WordCamp Vienna sehen und der ganze Schwung des WordCamp Europe w\u00e4re verschwendet. Doch – ihr ahnt es jetzt vermutlich schon – wieder war die Community st\u00e4rker. Denise \u00fcbernahm die F\u00fchrung und ein komplett neues Team fand zusammen. Und was f\u00fcr ein Team! Sie schafften es das WordCamp<\/a> nahezu auf das Doppelte von 2015 zu vergr\u00f6\u00dfern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nur zwei Tage vor dem WordCamp kontaktierte mich Denise und fragte ob ich ihnen helfen k\u00f6nnte denn ihnen fehlte aus Mangel an Freiwilligen ein MC. Nat\u00fcrlich sagte ich ja. Und damit war es um mich geschehen. Die Lust wieder ein Organisator zu werden war nie vergangen und das gab mir den letzten Schubs. Schon w\u00e4hrend jenem Wochenende beschloss ich 2018 zur\u00fcckzukehren. Und zum Gl\u00fcck wurde ich mit offenen Armen empfangen. Sie luden mich bereits zu ihrem privaten Nachbesprechungs-Abendessen ein und der Rest ist Geschichte. Ich war wieder Teil des Teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und hier sind wir heute. Die Mehrheit des Teams aus 2017 ist wieder an Bord aber es sind auch einige gro\u00dfartige neue Leute dazugesto\u00dfen. Wir sind st\u00e4rker als je zuvor und freuen uns auf das herannahende WordCamp Vienna. Wir werden gro\u00dfartige Vortragende haben und unser Bestes geben um euch das beste WordCamp das ihr euch vorstellen k\u00f6nnt zu bieten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und egal was als n\u00e4chstes passiert, egal wer bleiben wird und wer uns verl\u00e4sst, eine Sache ist sicher:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
