Keynote Speaker: Luca Sartoni

For many of us in the local WordPress community in Vienna, Luca Sartoni brought us together. I remember at one of the first WordPress Vienna meetups some years ago being surprised that Luca, who had recently moved to Vienna, almost immediately started working to create a WordPress community in Vienna. Now I know better than to underestimate Luca.

I was able to ask him a few questions in preparation for his keynote presentation at WordCamp Vienna about WordPress and the opportunities of the Open Web.

Luca Sartoni is a growth engineer at Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. He actively contributes to the WordPress community and co-organises WordCamp Europe, the world’s largest event about WordPress. He has a background in computer science, technology, marketing, and media. He is a prolific photographer.

Why did you choose to come to Vienna?
In 2010 I was offered a job at a startup based in Vienna, a couple of years later I joined another startup, and after I joined Automattic in 2014 I decided to stay because Vienna is conveniently located.
Why did you get involved with building the WP Vienna community?

Back in 2013 I was already involved in the WordPress community, volunteering at WCEU and attending other WordCamps. I realized there was no WP meetup in Vienna and I decided to start one with Paolo, who was already employed at Automattic and co-organiser of WCEU.

What would you like to see for the future of the WP project?

I’m very excited by the evolution of the Editor and the Customizer, the current two focuses of the current development cycle.
How can WP communities better incorporate sponsors and partners?
Making sure that sponsors and partners are well aware of the expectations that the community has from them. It’s not trivial to incorporate commercial entities and their practices within a community that has its own culture as the primary value. Sponsors and partners should be involved and educated, before just taking their money.

Announcing the Speakers and the Schedule!

We’re excited to announce our schedule! Congratulations to our speakers!

View Schedule

Choosing which topics we would have was not an easy task. Thanks to everyone that submitted. We were lucky to be overwhelmed with such well-developed proposals. It took us quite some time to sift through them all. Although the schedule is full, we wish that there was time to offer even more.

We will be having three tracks with one dedicated to advanced/development issues. Although most of the talks will be done in English, there is usually a German talk in each time slot.

Stay tuned for developments in our schedule. We plan to release our program for Contributor Day, April 23rd soon which will include workshops as well as opportunities to help make WordPress even better. We also have some surprises planned for our open slots on the main day. See you in Vienna!

Workshop: SEO-friendly content – Marieke and Annelieke (Yoast)

In our workshop on Contributor Day, we’ll focus on writing great and SEO-friendly copy. We’ll go into the settings of Yoast SEO plugin and we’ll help with all the SEO-questions people have.

Marieke van de Rakt is co-owner, blogger, researcher and manager at Yoast.com. Her expertises are content SEO and SEO copywriting. Marieke also runs Yoast Academy (with eBooks and online courses).

Annelieke van den Berg is Chief Marketing Officer at Yoast. She manages the marketing and the consultancy-department of Yoast. Annelieke has years of experience doing Yoast website reviews.

Marieke will also be speaking at the conference on Saturday on How to write a high-quality and SEO-friendly blog post.

What is a WordPress contributor day and why should I come?

Contributor day gives you a special opportunity to work together and learn from some of the best contributors in the community. Together you too can contribute to the awesome CMS that runs about 27% of all the websites on the web.  On this day you have a perfect chance to give something back to the community and you will definitely learn a lot in the process.

Everyone is welcome and you can contribute regardless of your skill level. You don’t have to be a developer or a designer to start contributing.  If you have never contributed before, this is a perfect time to get started. You will be guided by experienced contributors in a friendly and relaxed environment. So take the chance of taking both WordPress and yourself to the next level.

It’s really fun and rewarding and after a day of presentations you get a chance to learn by doing. You will also meet a lot of nice and interesting people to expand your network.

A lot of people think the contributor days are more rewarding than the main WordCamp event, both in terms of knowledge and networking.

In addition to the usual WordPress Contributor Day Sessions we also plan to  offer several 2-3 hour workshops on optimising your WordPress website (SEO / Marketing) and getting started with WordPress (how to setup and configure your own Website / Blog).

Come learn how WordPress is made and help make WordPress!

See you there!

The Contributor / Workshop Day will be held on Sunday, 23rd April, at Stockwerk Coworking Space, Pater-Schwartz-Gasse 11A, 1150 Vienna.  Times will be announced soon.
